Every year, Virginia sets aside the entire month of October in honor of Disability History and Awareness Month, encouraging everyone to help promote awareness and appreciation for all of the struggles and victories of the past. There are nearly a million people with disabilities right here in Virginia, so chances are everyone knows at least one person who has been directly affected by the work of the early advocacy pioneers.
According to the Virginia General Assembly, “Disability history education and awareness will promote positive attitudes in schools, creating a culture of mutual respect, understanding and equal opportunities for all.”
The Parent Resource Center has a lending library of information, resources and activities available for your use to increase “disability awareness” in your home, classroom and school.
